The Mouth of Truth Fountain is a relief featuring a god of the sea, his watery hair and dark eyes appear to peer into your soul, and legend has it that will bite the hand of any liar who places their hand inside, a kind of ancient lie detector.

Dating from the times of Emperor Hadrian, the original is situated in the wall of the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church, Rome. The relief originally had its own square, the Piazza della Bocca della Verita, but was relocated to its current position in 1632. Featuring in the Audrey Hepburn film ‘Roman Holiday’, the relief
attracts many visitors who queue up to have their photo taken with their hand in its mouth.
