When considering the purchase of a larger fountain (16” to 6 feet diameter), several things must be considered first. Review this list as the first step towards making your decision.
- Weight: The listed weight of the sphere is a reliable weight. The base stones are all natural stone and can typically be estimated at two to three times the weight of the sphere. The container’s weight and the weight of the water must also be calculated.
- Available space: Estimate that a Natural Base Stone fountain with it’s container will occupy at least two to three times it’s diameter (i.e. a 16” diameter sphere fountain will require approximately a 32-48” x32- 48” area). Overall heights vary significantly from fountain to fountain - normal height is 20 inches.
- Self-Contained: Fountains require less space overall than the natural base stones. Self-Contained fountains can also be made to sit inside another water retention area (base would be solid rather than hollowed out from solid base) with the water flow going outside the base stone rather than inside the base stone for water re-circulation (centerpiece of pool).
- Electrical: The pumps on the majority of the larger fountains operate on common 115V AC current using a 15-20 amp circuit breaker. It is advisable to check on applicable electrical codes for specific installation requirements. Larger fountains require 220V but gallons/liters per hour requirements are available upon request.
- Plumbing:Neither a water supply line nor drain are required to operate either natural stone or self-contained fountains A water supply line may however be advantageous, as when it’s combined with a valve and float, the water level can be automatically maintained as the water evaporates in the self-contained sytles. Self- contained fountains can contain the water supply internally. External pumps and filters can be plumbed for both style fountains.
- Container: The container which surrounds the natural base stone and sphere can be any type of basin which is water tight and is capable of supporting the fountain’s weight. Imagination is the only limit to application. Pool or grating system styles.
- Water Conditioning: Filtering of water added to basin is suggested and automation of filtering, chlorination, and auto-refill are available.
- Outdoor Applications: These fountains can be used outdoors when exercising certain precautions. A heating element can be used in the water for cold weather applications. Another point to consider is placing the fountain away from the threat of theft, vandalism or the risk of access by unattended children. A 20-24 inch or higher sphere is recommended for public installations.
